If you are planning a luxury holiday on the French Riviera, choosing the hotel is only half the decision. Just as important is where you want to wake up: Saint-Tropez or Ramatuelle?

They are close enough to experience both during the same trip, but the feeling of staying in each can be very different.

Saint-Tropez puts you closer to the restaurants, shopping, nightlife and energy people travel here for. Ramatuelle makes sense when privacy, views, wellness and switching off matter more.

One distinction matters from the start: Ramatuelle includes both a hilltop village and the coast around Pampelonne, with its lively beach clubs. Your particular hotel matters as much as the destination.

Stay in Saint-Tropez if you want to be part of the destination

For many travellers, the main point of staying in Saint-Tropez itself is convenience. Everything you could possibly need without having to waste your precious time off on the commute.

Dinner in town without turning it into an expedition? Drinks afterwards? Saint-Tropez has it all. Here, you have the luxury to be spontaneous. To spend the afternoon by the water, go back to the hotel to change and then decide at the last minute that you feel like going out.

Additionally, Saint-Tropez offers a wide range of different hotels, which means your stay doesn't necessarily have to turn into a party.

Your choice can range from the quieter, polished atmosphere of Cheval Blanc St-Tropez to somewhere far more social such as Hôtel Byblos, which we rate as the strongest pick in town for nightlife and being part of the scene. Cheval Blanc, meanwhile, combines proximity to town with direct waterfront access and exceptionally strong service and dining.

So if you are looking for a luxury stay in Saint-Tropez, you get to choose what kind of vacation you want, while keeping the comfort of staying close to everything.

Stay in Ramatuelle if the hotel is meant to be the escape

Ramatuelle suits a different version of the same holiday. You can still go into Saint-Tropez, but you are not waking up surrounded by its energy.

Of the Ramatuelle hotels we've researched, La Réserve Ramatuelle sits a short drive from Saint-Tropez, depending on traffic, and is positioned around privacy, serenity, villas, spa and a secluded setting.

That distinction sounds small until you experience it during your holiday.

If you are imagining slow mornings, long breakfasts, spa time, sea views and entire afternoons where there is no particular reason to leave the hotel, being slightly removed from town can feel like an advantage rather than a compromise.

That difference shows clearly: La Réserve is particularly strong for privacy and stands out for quiet, seclusion, views and wellness. For travellers looking at luxury hotels in Ramatuelle, that is often the appeal.

Saint-Tropez is somewhere you go to experience more, while Ramatuelle is somewhere you may choose because you want to do less and just stay in the moment.

What about beach access?

This is one area where the location name alone can be misleading. Staying in Saint-Tropez does not automatically entail better beach access, and staying outside town does not always place you far from the sea.

The hotel itself matters enormously.

For example, Cheval Blanc has direct waterfront access, while La Réserve's beach experience is nearby rather than directly attached to the hotel.

So if your ideal South of France holiday is mainly built around the water, compare the individual properties rather than choosing Saint-Tropez or Ramatuelle based on the map alone.

What about nightlife?

At this point the difference becomes much clearer.

If several evenings in town are already part of your plan, Saint-Tropez is the "no-brainer".

Cheval Blanc scores high in our research for access to the town's evening scene, while Hôtel Byblos is positioned even more directly around nightlife. By contrast, La Réserve is specifically not the obvious choice for someone who wants to walk into Saint-Tropez nightlife.

That being said, Ramatuelle does not imply staying in every night. Going out is still on the table, it just becomes more of a decision rather than something you casually add to your evening.

So, Saint-Tropez or Ramatuelle?

If this is your first luxury trip to the area and your priority is experiencing the restaurants, atmosphere and social side of Saint-Tropez, stay closer to Saint-Tropez.

If you already know that what you really want is privacy, wellness, views and somewhere beautiful to disappear for a few days, Ramatuelle may suit you better.

Neither is the more luxurious choice, they merely give you access to two different versions of the same destination.

And once you know which version sounds more like your holiday, choosing the hotel becomes much easier.
